London is a city of secret locations. From Churchill’s WWII bunker to the more recent Experimental Cocktail Club hidden amongst the chaos in Chinatown, you can walk through an area 1,000 times without noticing everything.
During a lazy Saturday in Shoreditch, a friend introduced a few of us to a new secret location in London – Aubin & Wills’ boutique cinema. Walking into the building feels more like shopping than movie going as you see the Aubin & Wills store before the theatre. But after a quick flight of stairs you enter a venue that overflows with awesomeness and begs for you to throw a massive party here.
Filled with plush lounge chairs and warm blankets, the Aubin Cinema, produced by the fashion house Aubin & Wills, is one of the best kept secrets in London and a great date location. Adding to its appeal as a date spot, is the stocked bar opposite the entrance. Offering all of the movie date essentials – wine, simple cocktails, popcorn and bar snacks – the prices are a little bit higher than the neighborhood pub or the no frills OEDON cinema, but there right in line with what you would expect from a good bar but less than a chic cocktail bar. Plus, this isn’t the sticky floor OEDON theatre experience you find throughout the city.
With 50 only seats total, the box office worker commented that the weekend shows normally sell out a week in advance, so it’s better to book your tickets early. The prices vary based on day of the week, type of movie (2D vs 3D) and type of seat (armchair, 2-seat sofa, deluxe 2-seat sofa or angled view). On the low end of the spectrum, tickets bounce around £6-8 and on the high end its £32 for a deluxe 2-seat sofa for a 3D movie. Compared to a 3D movie at the OEDON theatre in Leicester Square, the Aubin is not only a better venue, it’s also a better value.
So how did I hear about arguably the best movie experience in London?
